Ethylene Pyrolysis

Selas Fluid provides the most reliable ethylene furnaces in the industry. Our modern furnaces operate continually for up to five years without maintenance shutdowns, putting Selas Fluid 'top in class' as an ethylene furnace supplier.

A pioneer in the ethylene industry in the 1950's, Selas Fluid was an independent company that provided ethylene yield guarantees with its furnace design. Now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Linde Group, Selas Fluid and Linde Engineering have led the way in mega-crackers and have unparalleled experience in the design of large capacity furnaces. Our twin cell furnaces have been designed with ethylene production capacities of up to 250 metric tons per annum.

We understand our clients' need for flexibility in operation, and design our furnaces accordingly, with capabilities such as single-cell decoking and split cracking. Our continued success providing pyrolysis furnaces for olefin production has afforded us unrivaled experience with the full spectrum of ethylene feedstocks - from light hydrocarbons (ethane and propane) to heavy liquid feeds (kerosene and gas oils).

Selas Fluid/Linde can be counted on to meet the specific needs of our customers. Our global experience and technology, coupled with the latest advances in coil design and operating methods, enable us to design the most efficient high performance cracking furnaces available in the industry. We are fully qualified to provide all necessary services to ensure the successful completion of any project, whether in the form a study of existing cracking units, a revamp project, preparation of design specifications for a grass roots ethylene plant, or complete EPC contracts for new furnaces.

Selas Fluid also has current experience executing turn-key furnace addition projects, from basic engineering through design, construction and commissioning of furnaces, pipe racks and all tie-ins.

Ethylene Pyrolysis - Technically Advanced Features

The Selas Fluid/Linde Enhanced Gradiation® Design Principle is one example of the technically advanced features in our equipment. This system combines all the advantages of floor firing burners (high energy efficiency) with wall firing burners (excellent temperature control) in one unique system. The Enhanced Gradiation® design principle significantly reduces coke build-up in the coils of a pyrolysis furnace and prevents localized overheating. By controlling the rate of coke build-up, tube carbonization can be inhibited, thus reducing furnace maintenance costs while extending on-stream time.
The utilization of Linde’s exclusive short-residence time Pyrocrack® Coil Design allows for greater production of olefins than conventional coil designs for a given mass flow of feed stock. In order to offset rising utility costs, we have designed a variety of reliable heat recovery systems for greater furnace operating efficiency. Furnace efficiency is increased through the incorporation of an integral heat exchanger system to quench the cracked gases at the furnace outlet by producing high pressure steam. Selas Fluid/Linde specialized quench technology and experience provide for the proper selection of conventional exchanger designs, as well as our own proprietary steam generating quench systems for gas and oil cracking.

Ethylene Pyrolysis - Process Flexibility

In an industry faced with varied sources of feed stocks, today’s ethylene producers require a flexible design capable of meeting future needs. Our technically advanced, precision control design makes it possible to interchangeably (or even concurrently) crack the full range of feed stocks - without a penalty in product yield or run time. This operating flexibility is inherent in every Selas Fluid/Linde design.
